Even if you think it's not possible...
When was the last time you were shocked at the rising health care costs? If you're like most people, that need or want to receive any type of medical procedure, your heart rate probably jumped to the beat of a hard rock drummer once you learned how much it would cost you.
It's one of the main reasons why so many of us put off going to the hospital or visiting a doctor in the first place, even if we know we may have to and can't delay it any longer.
But what if there was a way to slash your doctor's, hospital, medication and follow-up care bills, sometimes almost as much as 70%, and still receive world class healthcare on practically any medical procedure and treatment you can imagine.
Well, here's how...
The secret to affordable quality health care
You may have caught on to the growing medical tourism trend already; each year more and more people are traveling to foreign countries to get all sorts of medical procedures. According to a recent report by the consulting firm McKinsey & Company, at least 85,000 Americans are doing so every year; but we believe the number is far higher.
The fact of the matter is, you'll probably end up saving thousands of dollars even if you include the cost of airfare and stay.
But cost is not the only thing you should consider when choosing where to travel. You probably want to find out more about the quality of the country's healthcare system, the ease and convenience of getting there and whether or not you'll be able to find decent insurance.
Becoming a “medical tourist” is a big deal; think about it, you're not just getting on a plane for a few weeks of basking under the Sun and drinking margaritas. You want to make sure that you're as safe as you can be.
And while you may want to travel halfway across the world to places such as India or Malaysia, there are a few closer to home destinations that might be just what you've been looking for.
Healthcare in Costa Rica
According to Wikipedia, “Costa Rica has been cited in various journals as Central America's great health success story. Its healthcare system is ranked higher than that of the United States, despite having a fraction of its GDP.”
And while you may not be very interested to learn that its Government run system has more than 30 hospitals and over 250 clinics throughout the country, providing free care for all its citizens and legal residents alike, you may want to find out why in 2006 Costa Rica received 150,000 foreigners to receive some form of medical service.
Why?
Again, it's not only that medical treatments are usually about 50-70% cheaper than in the United States, other important factors include:
• Closeness: Costa Rica is easily reached from the US and Canada. You can be there in less time than what you spend stuck in traffic (it's only a 2:40 hour flight from Miami). There are also two international airports with daily flights from a major cities in the US and Canada.
• There are 3 Joint Commission International (JCI) accredited hospitals to choose from. Many of the country's doctors are trained in the United States, so you know you're being treated by professionals, not some quack that just printed his or her license at the local Kinko's.
• The World's Health Organization (WHO) ranked Costa Rica's healthcare system at no. 36 in the year 2000, which was higher than that of the U.S.
• You can get international health insurance in Costa Rica, which means that for about $50-$100 per month you can be covered, at full cost, for most medical procedures.
There are many other reasons that make Costa Rica the destination of choice for medical tourists; and, if you take it a step further, it's likely that you might even consider it as a permanent place to live if you're tired of outlandish medical costs back home.
We have a hunch that you may very well be getting there.
