If you’re clueless or feel lost in choosing the right destination to live abroad, you might want to read on…

Because there’s no need for you to keep on sitting on the fence anymore, here are 5 reasons that thousands of other expats just like yourself consider Costa Rica as a great place to live.

Reason 1:  A large expat community

Regardless of how much preparation you go through, there are still going to be some growing pains when you move to a different country.

When you’re looking at having to adapt to a different way of doing things, of getting things done or even just finding something that you’re accustomed to back home (like that salad spinner you saw last Christmas), having a friend that’s already tread the path can be helpful to say the least.

Connecting with other expats can help you adjust to your new life, and there is no shortage of foreigners living in Costa Rica. There are estimates that there are as much as 500,000 expats that now call Costa Rica home, needless to say it’s one of the largest expats communities in the region.

Reason 2: Low cost of life

Remember when going to the movies didn’t actually cost you an arm and leg? In the last few years, doesn’t it seem like the prices for almost everything under the sky have jumped up to the stratosphere?

Insurance, education, food, electricity, medical costs, gas, you name it and it’s probably been hiked up.

So if we told you that you can live quite comfortably with half as much than what you do back home, would that tickle your fancy?

With a monthly budget of around $1,500 to $2,500 you can have a pretty good lifestyle in Costa Rica. You might not live a millionaire’s life but within reason you’ll be able to afford a lot more things…like a maid, massages, quality medical health care and more.

    Reason 3: Inexpensive housing

Comparatively speaking, with countries such as Belize, Mexico or Panama, prices for real estate in Costa Rica are low.

Of course, there are some places where prices are quite high (mostly in heavy touristy areas) but the same is true everywhere else.

However, in Costa Rica’s Central Pacific coast for example there is still prime real estate at fair prices; for around $150,000 you can build a dream home that’s practically on the beach.

    Reason 4: Low taxes

There are many tax advantages to living in Costa Rica: no capital gains taxes on real estate, minimal business taxes and tax free high interest bank accounts are just some of the benefits that both foreigners and locals enjoy.

Property taxes are also reasonable when compared to the U.S. currently at 0.25% of the property value. This means that for a $199,000 home, you’ll be paying around $500 a year.

    Reason 5: A better lifestyle

Costa Rica is a healthy country, not only that but you’ll also live a happier life (considering that the country topped the ranking as the globe’s happiest country in the most recent Happy Planet Index).

There’s also a very low incidence of violent crime, low cost quality health care, and a wealth of physical activities to stay fit.

When you take into account all of these factors and such intangibles as a more peaceful and laid back way of life it might give you something to really look forward to when moving to Costa Rica.

It probably has for many of the 500,000 expats already here.
