IDB approves loan of $20 million for protection of air •

In Costa Rica there are large amount of protected areas, where structures are absolutely prohibited

Three Costa Rican national parks and one wildlife refuge will receive funding to improve tourism infrastructure with a $20 million loan from the Inter-American Bank of Development (IDB).

The loan was administered by IDB and officials from the national system of conservation (SINAC) and Costa Rica ambient areas Ministry (MINAE).

The project will take place in the Tortuguero National Park (along the North Caribbean coast), Manuel Antonio (on the central Pacific coast), Rincon de la Vieja Volcano (in the Northwest) and in the Caño Negro wildlife refuge and wetlands (in the North). The municipalities where these parks will provide an additional $5 million for projects.

In Tortuguero National Park, will have $1.6 million will be used to build the first trail to access Cerro Tortuguero, a Summit that offers a panoramic view of the Caribbean coast and the famous canals.

In Manuel Antonio, the most visited National Park in the country, eight new tourist routes will be built at a cost of $1.2 million.

The main entrance at the corner of old volcano from the city of Liberia will also undergo repairs, including improvements to the surface of the road and ditches along seven miles of new road.

Caño Negro National refuge will have a new dock for easy access to its wetlands. Part of the funds will also be used for training and accreditation of local tour guides, MINAE said in a press release.

The Minister of environment and energy, René Castro said he hopes that projects will help promote ecotourism and bring benefits to the surrounding communities.

Work will begin this year, and officials said it could take up to three years so that they are completed.
